Who we are

Helping buyers ask better questions

BEST CARFAX is a vehicle-information website designed to make the research stage of buying a used car easier to understand. We highlight relevant vehicle history categories and guide visitors to official free lookup services. Our goal is clarity, not unsupported guarantees. We explain what manufacturer VIN data can establish, what independent checks can reveal, and how buyers can verify claims before paying. Missing records should never be treated as proof of a trouble-free vehicle.

Our principles

Information you can understand

Honesty first

Free VIN decoding is clearly separated from complete paid vehicle-history reports.

Practical research

Helpful tools and checklists encourage buyers to verify claims independently.

Buyer-focused

We explain the limits of public data and why an inspection still matters.

Accessible tools

We link to official public sources where they are appropriate for the vehicle.

What report categories mean

The history areas worth understanding

Salvage and title brands

Investigate whether a participating source reports a salvage, rebuilt, flood or other branded title.

Total-loss and damage events

An insurance total-loss record can raise important questions about past damage, but available reporting is not universal.

Odometer and auction records

Compare dated mileage events, available auction entries and sale paperwork for inconsistencies.

Our perspective

A report is one part of a smarter purchase

A VIN decoder can help identify a vehicle. It cannot prove that a car was never damaged, never stolen or never repaired. NHTSA decoding returns manufacturer-reported specifications; NICB VINCheck covers limited participating-insurer theft and salvage reports. Neither provides a comprehensive ownership or accident history. We encourage buyers to combine reports with seller records, title checks and a qualified mechanical inspection.

The decoder on this page uses NHTSA's free vPIC service for basic VIN information. For more checks, use NHTSA Recalls and NICB VINCheck. NICB says its free lookup is not a complete vehicle history report.
