Common questions

Straight answers, no fine print

These answers distinguish VIN decoding, safety recall searches, limited participating-insurer records and separately licensed vehicle histories. Combine these sources with seller documentation and an independent inspection.

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number is a code that identifies a vehicle. Older vehicles may use shorter identifiers. It can be found on the dashboard, door-jamb label or vehicle paperwork.

Is the VIN decoder really free?

Yes. NHTSA provides its public VIN decoding API without a charge. It returns available manufacturer-reported vehicle information, not complete vehicle-history records.

Does a VIN decode show accidents or previous owners?

No. Manufacturer specification decoding does not give a complete record of accidents, owners, liens, maintenance or title events.

Where can I check stolen or salvage records?

NICB VINCheck provides a limited free search based on insurer-reported theft and salvage records from participating companies. It is not comprehensive.

How can I check open recalls?

Use NHTSA’s official recall lookup or contact the vehicle manufacturer. Recall coverage differs depending on the vehicle and reporting period.

What if no problems appear in a search?

A blank or clean response is not proof that the vehicle has no issues. Inspect the vehicle, check documents and research additional sources.

What do the price plans cover?

Silver is $47.99 with delivery advertised within 12 hours, Gold is $68.99 with delivery advertised within 4 to 6 hours, and Platinum is $89.99 with delivery advertised within 15 to 30 minutes. Gold includes the Silver plan and Platinum includes the Gold plan. Actual service availability must be verified; checkout is not connected.

Can I check a non-US vehicle?

NHTSA vPIC focuses on vehicles intended for sale or importation into the United States. Some other vehicles may return limited or no results.

How can I contact support?

Open the Contact page and use the inquiry form. Message delivery is enabled only after verified business email settings are configured.

The decoder on this page uses NHTSA's free vPIC service for basic VIN information. For more checks, use NHTSA Recalls and NICB VINCheck. NICB says its free lookup is not a complete vehicle history report.
